Timber Flooring Installation in Ferny Grove: Rebuilding a Damaged Subfloor
There’s something special about a genuine timber floor. It brings warmth, character and a natural feel to a home that’s difficult to achieve with other flooring options.
This timber flooring project in Ferny Grove involved much more than simply replacing the floorboards. The existing subfloor structure had been badly damaged by termite activity, so the work required structural repairs before the new flooring could be installed.
Repairing the Damaged Subfloor
The existing timber subfloor had suffered significant termite damage. To properly rebuild the structure, we replaced:
- 2 hardwood bearers
- 10 hardwood joists
- 9 existing concrete posts, replaced with 100 x 100mm RHS steel posts
- Damaged timber flooring boards, replaced with mixed Brush Box boards
Getting access to the subfloor was one of the biggest challenges on this project. There was no practical access for mechanical equipment, meaning a lot of the excavation and preparation had to be completed by hand through hard ground.
A Lot of Preparation and Support
Projects like this require careful planning and plenty of temporary support before the damaged structure can be removed and replaced.
The team used a large number of props throughout the works to safely support the existing structure while the bearers, joists and posts were replaced.
Working in a restricted-access area and digging through hard ground by hand made this a labour-intensive project, but it was important to get the underlying structure right before installing the new timber flooring.
New Mixed Brush Box Timber Flooring
Once the subfloor repairs were completed, we installed mixed Brush Box timber boards throughout the area.
Brush Box is an Australian hardwood that brings natural warmth, character and variation to a timber floor. The mixed boards give the finished floor a natural appearance, with the different grain patterns and timber tones adding plenty of character.
Rather than simply covering up the existing problems, this project involved rebuilding the foundation and creating a completely refreshed timber floor from the structure up.
High-Quality 2K Polyurethane Finish
To complete the flooring, the new Brush Box boards were finished with a high-quality 2K polyurethane in a satin finish.
The satin finish gives the timber a clean, natural-looking appearance while providing a durable protective coating designed for everyday use.
It also helps bring out the natural grain and character of the Brush Box without making the floor overly glossy.
From Structural Repairs to the Finished Floor
This Ferny Grove project is a good example of why timber flooring installation can involve much more than laying boards.
With termite-damaged bearers and joists, replacement structural posts, difficult ground conditions and restricted access, the project required significant preparation and hands-on work before the flooring could be installed.
The finished result is a solid, warm and professionally finished Brush Box timber floor, backed by a properly rebuilt subfloor structure.
